Apprenticeships combine paid on-the-job training with classroom learning. A Registered Apprenticeship Program must be validated by the Department of Labor or by a State Apprenticeship Agency.

Per the US Department of Labor (USDOL), approved programs must include these five components:

  1. Payment (wages generally escalate as the apprentice progresses through the program)
  2. On-the-job learning
  3. Classroom learning
  4. Mentorship
  5. Credentials

NOTE: NGA is not an apprenticeship program provider or administrator. We only offer the curriculum portion of any apprentice program.

Available through MyGlassClass.com, our curriculum offers 430+ hours of education to meet the classroom learning requirement of most three-year apprenticeship programs. It includes online courses, manuals, and OSHA 30 certification. View the curriculum here.

The NGA Glazier Apprentice Curriculum is designed to be completed over three years, with courses separated into two blocks per year.

The NGA Glazier Apprentice Curriculum is only available to companies and organizations for use in a state-registered apprenticeship program.

Yes, the DOL has approved glazier apprenticeship programs in multiple states that use the NGA Glazier Apprentice Curriculum to meet classroom learning requirements, and on-the-job (OTJ) work hours to meet the OTJ learning requirements. NGA provides Trainer Toolkits to assist trainers supervising OTJ as guidelines for OTJ training. Hands-on training is up to the training provider (whether a registered apprenticeship program provider or individual company).

The DOL has approved the NGA Glazier Apprentice Curriculum as meeting the classroom component, even if all courses are taken in an online environment. This curriculum breakdown shows how it meets the 144-hour-per-year requirement, for a total of 432 hours of learning. Apprentices’ completion of courses, manuals, etc., is logged within MyGlassClass.com as part of their individual transcript. That transcript serves as verification for the DOL and for NCCER certification.

Any student who completes a registered apprenticeship program will receive a certificate from the state within which the program is registered. Depending on the state, apprentices will receive a certificate for completion that is generally considered journeyman level; however, some states may require additional testing or documentation to have a "journeyman" level certification. Additionally, students who complete the NGA Apprentice Curriculum will earn a jointly endorsed NGA/NCCER credential indicating a journeyman-level minimum competency reached through knowledge and performance. Students will also receive NGA certificates for each completed course and an OSHA 30 pocket card and certification.

To start a state registered apprenticeship, begin by contacting your state’s Department of Labor or other partnering organization. NGA provides curriculum documentation should your state request it. Additionally, we have partnered with several organizations offering a registered apprenticeship and can connect you with one in your area.

Under an individual program, you as the employer are responsible for building, registering, and maintaining your program. Under a registered apprenticeship program provider, the group sponsor is responsible for building a framework for multiple employers to use, holding the employers to that standard, and taking care of the administrative maintenance. Additionally, group sponsors offering apprenticeships already have a registered state program with all the parameters in place, so a new company can start their apprentices quickly compared to going directly through the DOL, which can take 12-18 months before any approvals are received.
